High Points of the Fashion Dialogue and Exhibition 2024

The Fashion Dialogue and Exhibition 2024, held at the Ladi Kwali Conference Center within the Abuja Continental Hotel, recently concluded as a landmark event in the fashion industry, particularly spotlighting the cotton, textile, and garment (CTG) sector. This blog provides an insightful recount of the discussions and highlights that shaped this pivotal gathering.

A Convergence of Minds and Visions

The event commenced with an eloquent welcome address by Mr. John Oke, the convener and a renowned consultant for the CTG value chain optimization program. Oke set a forward-looking tone, emphasising the importance of leveraging human resources to enhance economic prosperity through the fashion industry. He stated, “Contemporary global economics is increasingly requiring nations to focus on leveraging their human resources to drive economic prosperity…the fashion industry…stands poised as the cornerstone for the resurgence of not just the local economy, but Africa’s continental economy, positioning us for global competitiveness.”

The significance of the event was further highlighted by a keynote speech from the Honourable Minister of Trade and Investment, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, delivered by her representative, Mrs. Ene Sucre. Dr. Uzoka-Anite shared a significant development in policy: “As part of the inclusive and sustainable industrial development of the Ministry, it is gratifying to inform you all that the Government approved the re-categorization of gas pricing for the textile sector from commercial to strategic industrial sector. The gesture is to increase the competitiveness of our products through reduction of production cost.”

Technical Insights and Global Perspectives

Dr. Sam Amadi, a policy expert and former executive at NERC, delivered a compelling keynote that explored the role of government in facilitating economic growth through strategic interventions in the fashion sector. He argued, “The Nigerian fashion industry will develop according to the character of the Nigerian state. We have to become an entrepreneurial state to drive rapid economic development.”

The technical session, expertly led by Dr. Emeka Okengwu, outlined the strategic pathways for transforming the textile and garment sector. Dr. Okengwu presented a clear framework consisting of the enabling environment pathway, the techno-economic demonstration pathway, and the monitoring, knowledge curation, and dissemination pathway, aiming for widespread sectoral improvement.

A Showcase of Creativity and Innovation

The exhibition featured five distinguished brands: Taryll-Ilay Couture, Resurrection Clothiers, Makulu Fashion Brand, Sildek Designs, and Zenith Bank (represented by Dr. Paschal Onyemaechi, Branch Manager of Zenith Gudu Branch). Each brand displayed their latest collections, highlighting the innovation and diversity within the Nigerian fashion landscape.

A special moment was when Mr. James Ajogwu, MD of Resurrection Clothiers, was honoured with the Merit Award for his innovative contributions to the industry. The runway events were dynamically hosted by MC Quotna Bongi, adding a vibrant flair to the presentations.

Conclusion: A Foundation for Future Growth

The Fashion Dialogue and Exhibition 2024 celebrated achievements and set the stage for future advancements in the industry. By assembling a diverse group of experts, policymakers, and creatives, the event fostered a collaborative atmosphere that is primed to ignite innovation and propel the industry forward.

The official website of the event organisers, dialogue.fashion, continues to facilitate ongoing discussions about integrating fashion, culture, and economic development. This event exemplifies the effective interplay between policy and practice in fashion, pushing towards a more knowledge and skill-driven industry that promises to shape the economic landscape not only in Nigeria but across Africa and beyond.

This gathering in Abuja has undoubtedly established a benchmark for what is achievable when diverse minds collaborate to dialogue and innovate within the fashion industry. The outcomes from this event are likely to influence the sector for years to come, ensuring the nexus between fashion, culture, and economic development remains robust and fruitful.
